A Surprising Hobby

Robert W. Griggs went from the pulpit one Sunday to a locked psych unit the next. After serving twenty-five-plus years as a church pastor, Griggs was hospitalized for depression.

On his journey of recovery, Griggs invented a new hobby: hunting "wild coins." The rules of wild coin hunting became his simple practices to recover joy. Wild Coin Hunting is a relatable narrative that balances humor with hard truths as Griggs dispenses with self-help tropes and focuses instead on pleasure and other recovery essentials.

Praise for Wild Coin Hunting

"Using stories of heartbreak and hope, [Wild Coin Hunting] leads to an understanding of depression, the loss of self-identity that goes along with it, and the healing power of relationships."

Dr. Jeffrey D. Hamilton, LCSW
Director, Lancaster Pastoral Counseling and Education

"An honest and difficult look at living with depression. Griggs shares ... how little things inched him forward on the road to recovery."

Sue Abderholden, MPH
Executive Director, NAMI Minnesota
