Confronting a Legacy of Supremacy
To the great detriment of Christian faith, white Christian supremacy has been interwoven with American history since the time of European colonizers—not only in its racism, but also in its superiority complex:
- American Christians still assume theirs is the dominant religion in the US (note the annual lament over saying "Happy Holidays" rather than "Merry Christmas");
- many American Christians still assert that their religious morals (whether conservative or liberal) should be implemented to solve social problems;
- and it remains true that church-affiliated white Americans hold more racist attitudes than non-Christian white Americans (see the research in White Too Long).
The legacy of European Christians who aspired to create a "city on a hill" in the colonial era continues to influence how American Christians today—especially white American congregations—view their call to be saviors of their neighbors and communities.

Dismantling White Christian Supremacy provides an instructive review of the legacy that is weighing down white Christianity in this post-Christian era, and urges our return to Jesus's teachings and to the humble work of allyship.
To life faithfully in a post-Christian world, the author asserts, we need to disentangle Christian theology from white Christian supremacy by racializing whiteness and equalizing Christianity.
"To racialize whiteness and equalize Christianity, there are three steps churches can take: acknowledgement, repentance, and reparation."
