Stating Our Faith in Urgent Times
Testifying to Our Living Faith
In the United Church of Christ, we do not prescribe to creeds or confessions as required tests of faith. Our shared beliefs are identified through our sharing of testimonies, and one of our common testimonies is the UCC Statement of Faith:
We believe in you, O God, Eternal Spirit,
God of our Savior Jesus Christ and our God...
But, as Roger Shinn once stated, "The Statement of Faith was never meant to be everlasting." When, in 1983, General Synod affirmed the 1959 Statement of Faith along with the 1981 Statement of Faith, it did so "until such time as a new statement of faith is received." But a new statement was never developed.
We believe in jesus –
the full embodiment of god's love for the world
God Is Still Speaking,®: The Writers’ Group believes faith is critical in urgent times, and so we must state our faith—not merely in liturgical repetition but with living urgency.
We believe the day is coming
when God's grace will change the human heart...
Stating Our Faith in Urgent Times is an invitation—not merely to proclaim your personal credo but to build upon our shared bedrock. To deepen your love of God and neighbor. To refuel the faith that in turn fuels your actions.
I believe in Love
as the name of God,
as the story that life is telling...
Risk being stretched in new ways as you engage the original faith statements developed by the Stillspeaking Writers and shared in Stating Our Faith in Urgent Times.
